Trinidad is the largest of all the islands that comprise the famous Republic of Trinidad and Tobago. Nearby Tobago is situated to the north-east and is considerably smaller. The island of Trinidad has an overall population exceeding 1.2 million inhabitants and is especially close to Venezuela. Famed for its beaches and coastline, Trinidad is made up of numerous different cultures and communities.
The island's number one airport is Piarco International Airport (POS), which is located in the town of Piarco. Lying on the northern side of Trinidad, Piarco Airport dates back to the early 1930s and has recently been expanded. The airport is located to the south-east of the Port of Spain and is especially close to St. Joseph, Arima and Guaico.

Amongst the island's most notable beaches, Las Cuevas, Maracas and Mayaro beaches are especially popular. Maracas beach is a beautiful spot on the northern side of Trinidad and offers excellent conditions for bodysurfing, although it can become a little crowded at times. The beaches around the small village of Grande Riviere can be found along the northern coastline and are known for being an important nesting site for turtles.
The Port of Spain is the island's capital and is situated on the north-western side of Trinidad. A great place for shopaholics, the Port of Spain has a population of around 50,000. Other notable municipalities on the island include:
